MMSU-AC celebrates 27th Anniversary

In celebration of the  27th foundation anniversary of the American Corner (AC),  formerly known as American Studies Resource Center (ASRC),   a lecture on “Black Women Civil Rights” was held on January 14, 2012 at the AC  with Ms. Myra Michele Brown, regional information resource officer,  U.S., Department of State. Jakarta, Indonesia, as guest lecturer.

In her lecture, Ms. Brown cited that the civil rights movement could not have succeeded without the hard work of many women who received little or no attention for their efforts.  Women played a major role in the struggle for civil rights though most histories didn’t tell their stories.  She enumerated some women like Ella Baker, Rosa Parks, Septima Poinsette Clark, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King  and their significant accomplishments on civil rights during their times.

Dr. Reysa C. Alenzuela, director, Thomas Jefferson Information Center (TJIC), U.S. Embassy, Manila gave the TJIC Overview.  They were introduced by University President, Dr. Miriam E. Pascua.

Prof. Beatriz Malab, focal person, Center for Gender and Development and Related Studies led the prayer to start the program.  Dr. Lucena R. Felipe, director, University Library System delivered the Welcome Remarks. Mr. Rommel C. Dascil, Fulbright program scholar and a faculty member of the College of Arts and Sciences acted as the moderator during the Open Forum.   Ms. Angelica O. Salas, chief, Center for Human Rights Education delivered the Closing Remarks while Dr. Marlina L. Lino, chair, Dept of Languages and Literature acted as the emcee. Miss Angelica G. Morales, a second year BS Agricultural Engineering student rendered a vocal solo.

The program was attended by university officials, faculty members, staff and students of the University.
