Through a simple rite, the University Library System (ULS ) observed Human Rights Day on December 9, 2011 at the Main Lobby and at the MMSU-American Corner.
A paper show on “American Leaders in Civil Rights” and an exhibit of photos, books and other materials on Human Rights were featured and the ceremonial ribbon was cut by Prof. Maria Angelica O. Salas, chief, University Center for Human Rights Education and assisted by Dr. Lucena R. Felipe, director, ULS. An opening prayer was led by Ms. Fairie Ann R. Millare, a staff member of the ULS. The rite was attended by 128 students, faculty and staff of the University. The exhibit runs up to the end of December.
A lecture on “Human Rights Education in Action” was delivered by Prof. Salas to students where she emphasized the need to know about human rights, cited some examples of abuses and human rights violations and the situation of human rights in the Philippines.
Human Rights Day is observed annually in December 10. It is an occasion for people worldwide to reflect about the meaning, importance and need for human rights and to mark the anniversary of the presentation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rightson December 10, 1948 at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France. It is considered as the most translated document in modern history where as of this date there are more than 360 languages available and new translations are still being added. (FATRMillare)
