MMSU-American Corner at 30

The MMSU-American Corner (formerly known as American Studies Resource Center) reached its 30 years of information service on January 14, 2015. It was inaugurated on January 14, 1985.

The MMSU-AC is one of the 14 American Corners in the Philippines and is one of the three Corners in Luzon.   

Since the AC's inauguration, its collection has expanded to include various formats of information resources on a wide range of subjects – general references, philosophy, psychology, religion, history, business, economics, accountancy, sociology, political science, law, education, music, arts and humanities, communication/language and literature, pure science, medicine, agriculture, forestry, technology and engineering, military and naval science, science and library science.

From its first year collection of 629 volumes of 604 titles, the book collection has increased to 5,249 volumes of 4,131 titles. From only a few formats of information resources (e.g., books, periodicals, pamphlets/brochures, beta tapes, cassette tapes, posters, and maps), today, collection formats has increased to include also electronic media information resources (e.g., audio books, CD-ROMs/DVD-ROMs, CDs/VCDs/DVDs/videotapes, Kindle), online databases (virtual libraries and Internet access) and educational board games.

In celebration of the AC's anniversary the following activities were conducted: 1) Informational exhibit; 2) "Open House"; 3) Information sessions on the information resources, facilities, and services of the American Corner; satellite EducationUSA Advising Center; and eLibraryUSA cum Quizzes on the United States and American Corner; 4) Film viewing; 5) Video presentations on EducationUSA and Fulbright; 6) Audiobook listening on effective writing; and 7) Playing of board games.  

Participated by the university administrators, faculty and non-teaching staff members, and students, attendees of the various activities totalled to 1,550.                                                       

Prizes given to winners consisted of notebooks, lanyards, and ballpens from the U.S. Embassy Manila.

The informational exhibit was displayed up to the end of the month.
