On December 3, 2015, the MMSU-American Corner (AC) implemented one of its outreach program plans entitled: "Let's Read Together: Book Talks and Read Aloud Activities" for Grades 4 and 5 pupils of the Quiling Elementary School in the City of Batac, Ilocos Norte. The outreach program included also film viewing for the other grade levels (i.e., Kindergarten & Grade 1, Grades 2 & 3, and Grade 6) ; an exhibit of some books of the AC loaned to the school entitled " Read to Succeed" ; and giving of book donations by the U.S. Embassy.
The event aimed to: 1) encourage pupils to develop a lifelong love for reading and learning; 2) develop pupils' reading fluency, including oral reading skills and comprehension; 3) develop phonemic awareness and vocabulary among pupils; 4) enhance pupils' knowledge of English language; 5) inculcate to the pupils values derived from the stories; 6) demonstrate models of strategies in teaching English for the different grade levels for possible adoption of the English Teachers of Quiling Elementary School; 7) share children's books from the AC's Kids Corner through a book loan; and 8) instill the spirit of volunteerism among the officers/members of the MMSU-College of Art and Sciences (CAS) English Language Society.
The outreach program was conducted in partnership with the MMSU-Extension Directorate, MMSU-CAS English Language Society, and Department of Education City School Division of City of Batac, Ilocos Norte.
One hundred ninety-one pupils and seven teachers benefited from the outreach program.
Guests from U.S. Embassy Manila were present during the outreach program. They were: Ms. Princess Grace Wooden, Deputy Director of the Information Resource Center, Public Affairs Section; Ms. Affrille Degoma, EducationUSA Adviser; and Ms. Gina Callahan, Cultural Affairs Assistant, Public Affairs Section. Ms. Callahan delivered a message on behalf of the group.
